Is it wise for McCain to advertise that he will make decisions that go against the will of the people?

It worked for George W, didn't it? Americans seem to be really self-loathing. We don't think we're capable of making decisions in our own best interests, and yet we always vote for the "regular guy" that's "just like us" instead of a person with actual intelligence and knowledge.
