Do Catholics pretend to be accepting of science in order to make Catholicism seem more attractive?

I see a lot of Catholics here and in other places online openly proclaiming their acceptance of evolution and the earth being billions of years old. Now, there is always competition going on between the various Christian sects so do you think this competition is what is fueling the Catholics desire to seem more rational than other Christian groups? Do you think when it comes down to it, Catholicism is just as crazy and irrational as any Christian dogma and they are not motivated by the desire for truth, but the desire for more power?
